This comes as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) prepares to release the second installment of a $2.9 billion bailout, crucial for the country grappling with its most severe financial crisis in decades. How Does Does Sri Lanka Score on Labour Rights?

The WageIndicator Foundation released the latest edition of their Labour Rights Index which measures nations across 10 parameters. Sri Lanka received a score of 47 out of 100. The current Sri Lankan labour laws fail to restrict working hours, including overtime, despite repeated warnings by the World Health Organisation about the direct link between long working hours and heart disease. Additionally, Sri Lankan law does not require mandatory compensation for night work.

Furthermore, Sri Lanka's labour laws allow employers to inquire about pregnancy during the hiring process, which is a punishable offence in several neighbouring countries. Additionally, there is no requirement for paid parental leave for new fathers, not even a week.

When it comes to trade unions, which is the 10th parameter, Sri Lanka received the lowest score. Labour laws in the country do not allow workers to join unions to protect their interests, nor do they permit collective bargaining between workers and employers. To improve the situation and promote decent work, Sri Lanka should consider implementing the recommendations made by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
